QUESTION: Can I see the medical providers of my choice following a car accident?

ANSWER: Yes, after a car accident, you’re free to choose the medical providers you want to see — regardless of your regular health insurance network. The Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefit that is part of your car insurance policy and covers your medical expenses. No referrals are required to see a specialist, there are no deductibles you have to meet or co-pays for your medical appointments. Your PIP coverage is for up to two years or $15,000, whichever comes first.

Can I see the medical providers of my choice following a car accident? Absolutely yes.

The Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefit that’s part of the insurance policy for the car you were in during the accident includes coverage for your medical expenses due to the auto accident.

There are some advantages to PIP benefits that even the best health insurance policies don’t have.

Seldom is there a deductible with PIP coverage and if there is it can be no more than $250. There are no co-pays for your medical appointments and treatment visits. You do not have to have a referral to see medical specialists, such as acupuncturists, chiropractors, osteopaths, massage therapists, physical therapists, and any other medical providers you would like to see to help you recover from your injuries related to the collision.

PIP is not part of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and therefore, you don’t have to see someone in a particular network. If you have been seeing a Chiropractor for years who is in the Kaiser network, you can see that provider for your recovery and receive your treatment from them.

You’re also free to see someone outside of the Kaiser network of providers. Because you’re receiving medical care due to an auto accident, you can see the type of provider or providers you believe will help you have the best possible recovery, as quickly as possible — whether they’re within your regular health insurance network or not.

Your PIP coverage will pay your medical bills for your injuries for up to two years, or a maximum of $15,000 of medical treatment — whichever happens first.

See the providers you want to see. Get the treatment you need. Your medical expenses as a result of the car accident will be paid by your PIP coverage.
